Mount St. Mary’s Men’s Water Polo Earn First Victory in the Water Against Austin

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 5, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo on day two of the Navy Open bested Austin, winning 16-12. With this win, the Mount's record is now 1-1 for the season.

In the first quarter, the Mount were down by one after an Austin goal in the first three minutes, before Luka Urosevic striked back a minute later to tie 1-1. Then Neven Cerkez scored a goal after a penalty 30 seconds later. Will Matthews was then able to add his name to the scoresheet, creating a 2-0 run by the Mount. After a goal was scored by Austin, Urosevic strike hits the back of the net again to bring the score to 4-2. There was one more final goal by Navy in the first before they got held scoreless the rest of the period. This led to a 5-0 Mount run where Nikos Agritelis, Giannis Skliras, Jack Fox, Matias Miranda, and Nick Harper were all able to add a tally to the score sheet. Fox was the only one of these five to score off a penalty.

Austin opened the second quarter with momentum striking back with two goals to decrease the deficit Mount had created before Skliras found the back of the net again in response, followed by another Urosevic goal. Austin then added two more goals to their score sheet, ending the half with Mount up by four with a score of 11-7.

Going into the second half, Urosevic opened the doors with another goal against Austin. Austin then scored another, followed by a Matthews goal. This continued once more where Austin would score, then a minute later Fox found the back of the net again. Austin goes on to only score three more goals before being held scoreless by the Mount only a fourth of the way in the fourth period. Mount then tallies on two more goals in the fourth, both coming from Urosevic, one coming with only a minute left in the game.

Urosevic led the Mountaineers on the day with six goals. Matthews, Fox, and Skliras scored two, while Agritelis, Cerkez, Harper, and Miranda each scored 1.
