Marist Defeats Mount St. Mary's, 4–1
EMMITSBURG, Md. — Marist earned a 4–1 win over Mount St. Mary's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's tennis action on Saturday at the Rooney Tennis Courts. The Mount fell to 3–8 overall and 2–1 in MAAC play, while Marist improved to 5–4 overall and 1–0 in conference competition.
Marist claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Nick Suhanitski and Thomas Bevan defeated Stefanos Pournaropolous and Nikos Makris 6–4 at No. 1, while Ian Layton and Alejandro Abella Fernandez topped Alessio Guarino and Akarsh Gaonkar 6–4 at No. 3. The Mount picked up a win at No. 2 doubles, where Alexi Roy and Ryan Wagner defeated Jose Catala and Gregor Heinemann 6–3.
In singles, the Mount's lone point came from Pournaropolous at No. 2, as he defeated Abella Fernandez 6–3, 6–1.
Marist clinched the team victory with wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Jose Catala defeated Gaonkar 6–2, 7–6 (7–5) at the top spot, Thomas Bevan topped Makris in three sets at No. 5, and Gregor Heinemann earned a pair of tiebreak wins against Guarino at No. 6. Two other singles matches were left unfinished.
