EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 30, 2025) – Starting off the season with a bang, Mount St. Mary's women's rugby jumped out to a 31-0 lead and never looked back, defeating the La Salle Explorers to take victory in the season opener, 55-12.
Olivia Woodward and
Caliann Dietz provided two tries each for the Mountaineers in the victory.
Shaniah Mayers sent forth five conversions to aid in the scoring. In the second half,
Koda Hall and
Josie Schussler registered their first career collegiate tries.
Woodward led off and capped off the first half with her two tries to put the Mount ahead 24-0 at the break. Dietz added one of her tries, and Tori Holmes supplied the other. Lily Myers scored with a Mayers conversion to go up 31-0 before La Salle broke the shutout. The Explorers – playing in their inaugural match as a program – went on to score 12 of the next 17 points. Hall, Dietz, and Schussler each found the try zone as the Mount punctuated the victory with a 19-0 run.
The margin of victory is Mount's largest since a 77-10 win over Princeton on October 15, 2022. It also marks the third time women's rugby has won the season opener, and the first since defeating American International 19-17 in 2019.
Next Saturday (Sept. 6), Mount St. Mary's opens the home season at Echo Field, hosting a 1:30 p.m. match against Sacred Heart.
