Grube’s Three Run Shot and Rudisill’s Grand Slam Seal Sweep Over Saint Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (May 11, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's baseball won the second and third game of their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference double header against Saint Peter's by scores of 17-12 and 15-4, finishing off their first MAAC conference sweep of the year. With the wins on Mother's Day, the Mountaineers move above .500 with a 14-13 conference record and an overall record of 22-27.

In game one of the days against the Peacocks, the Mountaineers found themselves ahead 6-0 through the first four innings. An Alex Mendes ground out and a Bryce Rudisill ground out drove home Evan Meier and Sam Grube for the early lead in the third. Grube went on to triple in the fourth, driving in Meier and Ethan Flaugher in the bottom of the fourth followed by a Rudisill single to right field that scored Mendes and Grube for a 6-0 lead.

Saint Peter's went on a tear in the fourth and fifth innings as 10 runs came across to plate for the peacocks, grabbing their first lead of the game. Ty Fredo and Sam Grube drove in two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings respectively, but heading into the top of the ninth, the Mountaineers found themselves down 12-8. The comeback began at the top of the ninth after Sam Grube doubled down the left field line, scoring Mikey Rodriguez. Mendes hit an infield single the next at-bat, scoring Meier. This score was followed up by a Nick Fleming walk with the bases loaded to drive in Grube to cut the deficit to one run. But the game-tying run came from a Fredo sacrifice fly to right field that scored Mendes to tie the game up in the top of the inning. Maximus McCrary entered the game for the Mount in the bottom of the ninth and proceeded to go three up and three down against the Peacocks lineup, forcing extras.

In the bottom of the tenth, McCrary continued to deal, striking out two batters while stranding two Peacocks on the base paths to end the inning. Finally, in the top of the eleventh, the Mountaineers offense began to pour things on. With the bases loaded Evan Smith was hit by a pitch, driving in Patrick Hebda for the go-ahead run. During the next at bat, Kyle Cincinnati was hit by a pitch, driving in Fleming. With the Mount down to their final out in the inning, Sam Grube sent a ball out over the wall in right center, driving in Cincinnati and Smith for the game's final runs. McCrary continued his efforts on the mound in the bottom of the eleventh, sitting down the order with two runners on for his fourth win and third save of the year.

In game two, the Mountaineers put up five runs in the first three innings, retaining a 5-0 lead until Saint Peter's got on the board in the fifth with a fourth in the inning. But with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Bryce Rudisill sent a towering shot out over the right field wall for a Grand Slam, improving to a 9-4 lead.

From then on, the Mountaineers continued to pour on the runs in the seventh. Evan Smith hit out a two-run home run to right field to start the seventh followed by a Grube single to right center that scored Meier and Cincinnati. Nolan Book followed the run carousel up with a single to right, scoring Grube followed by a Evan Smith hit by pitch with the bases loaded, driving in Mendes for the final run before the game ended in a run-rule during the eighth inning. Jakob Foster pitched 4.1 innings while allowing one earned run and striking out four Peacocks in the process. Ryan Brown was accredited with his second win of the year after reliving Foster in the fifth.
