HERSHEY, Pa. (April 6, 2025) — Mount St. Mary's men's tennis continued its strong spring campaign with a 4-1 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday at the Hershey Racquet Club. The win pushes the Mount to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
The Mountaineers earned the early advantage by taking the doubles point with clutch performances at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Alexi Roy and Akarsh Gaonkar came through in a tightly contested tiebreak at No. 1, defeating Matyas Venci and Enrique Laennec-Baffrey, 7-6 (8-6). Ryan Wagner and Aaron Thompson sealed the point with a 7-5 win at No. 3 over Connor Liona and Brennan Hart-Nova.
In singles play, Roy was dominant at the No. 2 spot, dispatching Laennec-Baffrey 6-2, 6-2. Filippos Zachiotis battled through a marathon three-setter at No. 3, bouncing back after a tiebreak loss in the first set to win 6-7 (10-12), 6-0, 6-4 over Antoine Hernandez.
Lucas Evans delivered the clinching point for the Mount at No. 4, edging Paul Goncalves 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Although Sacred Heart grabbed one point at the top spot, with Venci defeating Gaonkar 6-4, 6-4, the Mountaineers controlled the match throughout.
Two matches went unfinished. At No. 5 singles, Thompson and Lucca LaFrance were in a third-set battle, while Alessi Guarino and Charlie Levinson were tied 5-5 at No. 6 when play was halted.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action Saturday, April 12, with a conference road match at Quinnipiac.
