Mount Softball Drops Pair to Canisius

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 29, 2025)--Mount St. Mary's softball dropped both ends of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader to visiting Canisius on Saturday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.  The Mount lost the opening game, 6-2, before falling in five innings, 10-0, in the nightcap.

In the opening game, Canisius (12-12, 2-0 MAAC) opened the scoring in the top of the first on Ella Johel's RBI triple.  The Mount answered back in the bottom of the frame when Kelsie Bandelow doubles, stole third base, and scored on a passed ball.  The Golden Griffins regained the lead in the top of the third when Emily Ilano homered off the top of the center field fence to a 3-1 advantage.  Canisius added two unearned runs in the fifth and one more run in the sixth to build a 6-1 lead.  The Mount's Tristin Koerner hit her second home run of the season, a shot just inside the left-field foul pole, in the bottom of the sixth to round out the scoring.

Gina Del Giorno went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Mount in the opening game.  Sophia Schmehl started for the Mount, allowing six runs (four earned) with four strikeouts in five innings of work.  Amaya Bowman pitched two innings of scoreless relief.

In the second game, Canisius took control early with a six-run second inning.  The Golden Griffins added a single run in the third, and clinched the win with three unearned runs in the top of the fifth.  Briana Manni went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Mount while Bandelow, Laurenne Gallagher and Tyra Christian each added a hit.  Ellie Meier took the loss, allowing four runs in 1.1 innings while Olivia Murphy allowed six runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings of relief.

The teams conclude the three-game set with a single game at noon tomorrow.
