Free position goals aided the Mount early as they battled to a 2-2 tie in the first quarter. The Stags rallied in the last 1:17 of the opening period, scoring twice for a 4-2 lead. Harmening registered the first goal from open play for the Mount with 12:42 left in the first half. A timeout down 6-3 galvanized the visitors, who pulled within one, before the Stags completed another successful try to hold a 7-5 advantage at the break.
Salerno capitalized off a free position two minutes into the second half, but that would be all the offense for the Mountaineers the rest of the way while Fairfield went on a run.
