Coach Leoni & Crew Close Out Regular Season; Look to Make Strides in the Postseason

JERSEY CITY, NJ (May 18th, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's was edged by a run in this afternoon's game against Saint Peter's, 11-10. The Mountaineers took the series 2-1 while clinching a playoff spot as the fourth ranked team after their win in the series-opener.

Mount St. Mary's will play Canisius in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday, May 22nd at 3 p.m. The loser of the game will turn around to play immediately and the winner advances to the next day to play Fairfield or Niagara.

The Peacocks broke out of the gate with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. They strung together four hits, three being doubles, and a steal to take an early lead, 7-0.

The Mountaineers responded quickly with three runs in the top of the second inning after an error on the first baseman opened the scoring allowing Efrain Correa, Jr. to and Jayson Kramer to reach home plate. JT Landwehr followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring David Stirpe to cut the deficit, 7-3.

Scoreless third and fourth innings largely due to strong pitch on the mound from the Mount's Kyle Speas. Speas took the hill in the second inning and proceeded to throw four scoreless innings before allowing his first run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning after both scoring on a walk. A scoreless sixth inning brought us to the seventh behind four runs. The Peacocks cushioned their lead with a run in the bottom of the frame to go up, 9-4.

The Mountaineers bats came to life in the top of the eighth inning as they erupted for five runs on three hits.  Scott Seeker opened the scoring with an RBI double to left field followed by a walked in run with the bases loaded. Stirpe stepped back up to the plate to hit a bag clearing single to right field to knot the game at nine.

The Peacocks answered with two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead, 11-9. The Mountaineers were able to add a run in the ninth inning credited to Tyler Long on a sacrifice fly. Ty Stecko approached the plate in a two out, bases loaded scenario and hit a screaming line drive to third base, an unlucky placement as the fielder was able to make a play on the ball to end the game.
