EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 29, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo took one of two contests on its lone home date of the season, defeating the Siena Saints and falling to the Marist Red Foxes. Prior to the Marist game, the Mountaineers honored eight members of the senior class in a poolside ceremony.
Ana Luisa Cotta scored seven times to lead the Mount's offense.
Anna Kegel had a hat trick in the victory and
Robyn Currie and
Anita Radaelli had three goals across the two games.
A brief 1-0 deficit was no match for the Mount in the early game.
Anita Radaelli kicked off a four-goal rally to transfer the game into 4-1. Siena responded with four in a row of their own, and
Beatrice Vieira replied with a game-tying goal at the half. Trailing 9-7 entering the fourth, staunch defense shut out Siena and key goals from Kegel – who found an opening from the left side – and a game winner from Vieira helped the Mount surge ahead.
Strong defense carried over into the afternoon contest as the Mountaineers managed to hold the Red Foxes at bay for a time. Cotta scored twice to aid the Mount's early lead, but Marist was able to battle back and forge a tie. Goals by Vieira and
Emily Van Kerckhove excited the home crowd as the home side with up 4-2 in the second quarter. The Red Foxes flipped the script with eight of the next nine goals to take control.
The Mountaineers travel to Villanova for games against La Salle and the host Wildcats on April 6.
