Niagara University, N.Y. (March 16, 2024)--The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 7-0 loss at Niagara on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers drop to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the MAAC with the loss.
Niagara (6-2, 1-0 MAAC) took two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Tanner Bedard and Trevor Masi earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over the Mount's
Victor Mignot and
Elliot Stevens. The Mount's pair of
Marcel Cronin and
Luke Papayoanou fell, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles before the Mount's No. 3 tandem of
Jarrett Karnibad and
Filippos Zachiotis won 6-4 over Vid Maric and Jose Maria Garcia.
In singles play, the Purple Eagles won all six matches to seal the win. Zachiotis lost in a third-set tiebreaker to Masi, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-5) to Masi at No. 2 singles while
Akarsh Gaonkar lost in a third-set tiebreaker to Maric, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 3 singles.
The Mount is back in action with a non-conference matchup at St. Bonaventure.
