Baseball Comes up Short in Thriller Game at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. (February 18th, 2024) – A back and forth thriller game wasn't in the forecast, yet, it's what the game of Baseball brought the fans today. The Mount tied the game at five in the fifth inning and were the first to score in the ninth to make it a 6-5 game. The Spartans answered with a home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 12th, Raphael Rodriguez hit an RBI single to left field to ice the game, 7-6.
 
The Mount was the first to add to the scoreboard in the top of the third inning, after Joey Agar walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tyler Long was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. A sac-bunt laid down by JT Landwehr advance Agar and Long to second and third with two outs. A wild pitch later allowed Agar to cross home plate and Long to third. Jayson Kramer batted Long in with a double down the right field line, 2-0.
 
In the bottom of the third, Rodriguez homered to lead off the Spartans. A single to third and an RBI triple to right center allowed Collin Curry to score to knot the game. Jamal Ritter added an RBI after grounding out to second, 3-2.
 
At the top of the fifth, the mount loaded the bags with runners Aiden Tierney, Agar, and Long with no outs. After a pitching change, Landwehr scored Tierney on a single to center field and pushing his runners ahead a bag. Kramer drew a walk allowing Agar to score, 4-3.
 
In the bottom of the frame, the Spartans loaded the bags with two outs. Brendan Burke batted Cam Mazell and Swaroop Pujari in with a single down the fight field line, 5-4.
 
Aiden Tierney tied the game in the top of the sixth with a single to center field, pushing Braden Ramirez across the plate, 5-5.
 
The game was knotted headed into the top of the ninth inning. Long started things off reaching first on an error by the first baseman. Landwehr followed being hit by pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Kramer stepped to the box and got the sign to lay a sac-bunt to put his runners in scoring position. Stirpe added to his day with a double to left field, pushing Long across the plate and Landwehr to third. The inning came up short after Scott Seeker hit into a double play to second base, 6-5.
 
Swaroob Pujari extended the game into extra innings with a solo homerun to right field, 6-6.
 
Close calls in the10th and 11th innings extended the game into the 12th where the Spartans were able to string together a couple hits in a double down the left field line and a single to left field allowing Camrin Sturgeon to cross the plate, 7-6.
