EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 2, 2024) – An 88
th minute goal from sophomore
Maks Czyz secured a 2-2 draw against the Siena Saints. The result gives Mount St. Mary's men's soccer a 3-2-2 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play, good for 11 points, which set up the team for numerous clinching scenarios heading into the regular season finale.
Czyz's strike came off a corner kick – the only one granted to the Mount for the entire match.
Dominik Topolsky sent the ball towards the back post, where the Alesund, Norway product was ready with the header. The goal is Czyz's third of the year, which ties him for the team lead.
Topolsky also picked up his third goal of the season, sending home a penalty kick in the first half. Combined with the assist, the senior from Cassis, France boasts 10 points on the season to lead all Mountaineers.
On defense, Mount St. Mary's had an active day, facing 17 Siena shots with eight landing on goal.
Julian Marcos finished the afternoon with five saves and
Erick Villatoro prevented a sixth attempt from crossing the line in a key team save.
The draw snaps a two-game slide and gives the Mountaineers a critical point in the MAAC playoff race. Any positive result for the Mount, win or draw, in their final game will punch their ticket to the quarterfinals on November 10. A victory provides a big boost for a possible home match. Even a defeat is not a dealbreaker, but the team would need assistance from other results to clinch.
Wednesday (Nov. 6) concludes the regular season, as Mount St. Mary's hits the road once again to face Rider. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. from Ben Cohen Field.
