Emmitsburg, Md. (November 1, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo was defeated by Bucknell in Double Overtime 12-11 in the final home game of the 2024 season. They are now 5-25 with a conference record of 3-9.
To start, the Mountaineers scored four unanswered goals to open the scoring with a shutout first quarter from
Sherif Hosni in the deep end cage.
Nicholas Wallace-Whitfield and
Chrysostomos Valavanis added their names to the scorecard with
Aaron Tarr adding an early pair of goals to cap off the scoring in the first quarter.
A back and forth second quarter saw the Bisons outscore the Mount by a single goal in a hotly contested 3-2 quarter before the halftime intermission.
Alexandros Bellesis added the first two goals of his four-goal outing during this time. He added another goal with two minutes left in the third as the Bisons battled back to have 4-1 third quarter.
Another hotly contested period came in the final quarter of regulation as the Mount went on 4-1 run to start the quarter. Valavanis scored two goals in the hole set as he tipped both away from the keeper. But Bucknell battled on, scoring three times within two minutes to send the match to overtime.
Two shutout periods of overtime were played before the match was sent to a sudden death double overtime, where with 1:45 left on the clock, Bucknell scored the final goal in a death blow to the game.
