Mount St. Mary's scores first try of the season in loss against Queens

Charlotte, NC (October 5, 2024)- The Mount St. Mary's women's rugby team lost to Queens on Saturday (Oct. 5), 79-7.

How it happened

The Royals started strong against the Mount, scoring two tries and conversions in the first 10 minutes of the match. Queens continued to build a lead, scoring four more tries before the end of the first half. The penalties from Queens in the first half also helped the Mount get down toward the try zone, but the Royals' defensive line was strong and held up against the attack. Queens held a strong lead at half 42-0.

The break at half didn't slow the Queens offense as they scored less than one minute into the second half, making the score 49-0. The Royals continued to show strength against the Mount, although both sides were struggling with players going down with cramps and injuries. Finally, The Mount breaks the shutout and scores their first try of the season with Savannah Short grounding the ball in the try zone, making the score 56-7. The celebration came short-lived though after Queens scored four more tries to give the Royals a 79-7 advantage with six minutes remaining in the game. The game slowed down toward the end, with neither team making headway against the other.

Up Next for the Mount

The Mount will head to Rhode Island to take on Brown on Saturday, October 19.
