Emmitsburg, MD (October 12, 2024) - The Mount St. Mary's women's rugby team put up a strong fight in their loss to Long Island University, 56-0. The Mount showed their strength driving down the field throughout the game but turnovers and defensive stands by the Sharks stopped the offensive.
How it happened
LIU came out strong scoring a try less than five minutes into the game. After a missed conversion, the Sharks took an early 5-0 lead. The Mount battled at their try line, fighting against a strong LIU front line. The Mount gained momentum from a missed penalty kick, returning the miss and driving down the field. The Mountaineers had several opportunities to score their second try of the season but were stopped at every attempt. Both teams fought to get down the field with LIU having multiple breakout runs to score their tries. At the half the Sharks held a commanding lead, 24-0.
After the break, LIU marched down the field once against and scored a try four minutes into the second half. The Sharks scored three more tries before a yellow card was charged to their team. The Mount tried to use the momentum of having the numbers advantage with the card to score but were unable to push through the defense. The Sharks scored two more tries against a gassed Mount team and took the win 56-0 on the road.
