Emmitsburg, Md. (September 5, 2023)--Mount St. Mary's was clipped by visiting Delaware, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Waldron Family Stadium.
Bobby Marsteller and
Mackie Sacarellos each scored for the Mountaineers in the game.
Delaware struck first in the 17th minute when Sam Donnellan flicked home a header past Mount keeper on a cross from Justin Ruth. It didn't take long for the Mount to answer as just 22 seconds later, Marsteller found the back of the net to even the score. Marsteller collected
Ondrej Soukup's cross to the middle, made a quick turn and then beat the keeper to the lower left of the goal to make it 1-1. That would be the halftime score as the teams played even the rest of the half. The Mount outshot Delaware, 10-7, in the opening 45 minutes with the Blue Hens holding a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Blue Hens (3-0-1) carried play to begin the second half and broke through for the go-ahead score in the 60th minute on a nice passing play. Luke Catten fed the ball to the middle to Richard Monath, who then executed a give-and-go with Mikey Johnson. Monath finished the cross to make it 2-1. Delaware added what proved to be an important insurance goal when Carlos Fernandez scored on a feed from Muth in the 78th minute for a 3-1 lead.
The Mountaineers (0-3-1) kept pushing and cut the deficit in half with 2:11 remaining in the game when Sacarellos headed home a cross from Marsteller to make it a 3-2 game. The Mount was unable to generate a good scoring chance the rest of the way and Delaware was able to hold on for the win.
Delaware finished the game with a 13-to-12 shot advantage and an 8-to-3 edge in corners. Mount goalkeeper
Ethan Russell made a pair of saves while Delaware's Eddie DeMarco also had a pair of stops.
Up next, the Mount faces a tough road test when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on No. 8 James Madison. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
