EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 29, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo grabbed a 17-16 win over Westcliff in a split during the second day of the Gary Troyer Invitational. Chapman took the victory in the second game by a 21-14 final.
Joseph Maxson set the Mount school record for saves in a game, with 18 rejections against the Warriors.
Alexandros Bellesis tallied his 100
th career goal against Westcliff with his second of five scores in the opening game, becoming the third player in school history to achieve the feat. In the second game with the Panthers,
Chrysostomos Valavanis led the Mountaineer offense with a season high in goals for the sophomore.
Trailing 9-8 to Westcliff at the half, the Mount tallied four goals in the third period. A shot by Bellesis with 3:42 left in the frame exchanged the lead at 12-11. After the Warriors rallied to tie at 15, Bellesis had another answer, followed by
Eli Thalos with a goal to set the Mountaineers apart.
Rounding out the Mount's weekend at the Gary Troyer Invitational are games with Air Force and Biola on Saturday, September 30.
