Jarrett Karnibad and
Filippos Zachiotis nabbed a pair of school records to pace the Mount men's tennis team at the Rick McClure Invitational hosted by Loyola on Friday. The duo went 2-0 in doubles matches to break the school record for most wins by a doubles team and the most wins in tournaments by a doubles pair. The tournament completed two rounds today with the rest of the invitational being cancelled due to the rain expected to sweep through the area the rest of the weekend.
Karnibad and Zachiotis, who set the Mount's single-season record for wins by a doubles team last year with 22, improved to 4-1 this year as a tandem. The pair is now 34-9 all-time as a doubles pair, breaking the previous school record of 33 career wins by a doubles team that was shared by Drew Arbeiter and Phil Holliday (2001-05) and Taylor Place and Matthew Blake (2009-13). Karnibad and Zachiotis also moved to 14-4 all-time as a doubles team in tourmament place, breaking the old mark of 12 wins.
The tournament format featured groups from each team playing two singles matches and a doubles match to combine for a team score. Zachiotis and Karnbiad opened the day with a 3-0 win over a trio from Loyola. Zachiotis downed Ryan Boland, 8-1, in singles with Karnibad topping Trevor Girandola, 8-3. In doubles, the Mount duo picked up their first win of the day, 6-4, over Boland and Jorge Quntana. In their second match of the day, Karnibad and Zachiotis edged a pair from Morgan State, 2-1. Zachiotis won 8-4 in singles play while he and Karnibad won 7-5 in doubles in their record-breaking match.
The Mount's trio of
Elliot Stevens,
Victor Mignot and
Pablo Martinez Zuccardi earned a 3-0 win in their first match over a team from Morgan State. Stevens and Mignot won the doubles point, 7-5, with Stevens and Martinez Zuccardi winning their singles matches. The pair then edged a team from Morgan State, 2-1, to go 2-0 on the day. Stevens and Martinez Zuccardi won 6-3 in dobles while Zuccardi picked up the singles win, 8-6.
The Mount's final two teams both lost their first match before capturing wins in their second.Â
Akarsh Gaonkar and
Marcel Cronin won their doubles match, 6-4, over a team from Loyola, bu the Greyhounds pair swept the singles matches for a 2-1 win.Â
Andrew Allen,
Ryan Isgett and
Aaron Thompson dropped a 3-0 decision to a Morgan State team in their opening march. Ganokar,
Luke Papayoanou and Cronin earned a 2-1 win in their second match of the day with Papayoanou and Gaonkar winning 6-3 in doubles and Cronin sealing the win with an 8-5 win in singles. The Mount trio of Thompson, Isgett and Allen swept a team from Harford Community College, 3-0, in their second effort on the day.
The Mount men's tennis team returns to the courts at the ITA Atlantic Regionals from October 11-15 at Liberty University.
