Lewisburg, Pa. (September 1, 2023)—The Mount St. Mary's men's and women's tennis teams opened play at the Bucknell Invitational on Friday afternoon. The tournament started with singles competition with the Mount women capturing four victories and the men's team had a 6-3 record on the day.
For the women, in the singles Blue Group, freshman
Margherita Trolese opened her Mount career with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Saint Francis U's Sara Jankovic. Graduate transfer
Sofia Kostirko pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Bucknell's Whitney King.
In singles Orange,
Ana Alvarez-Storni cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Valeria Vinces (SFU) while
Adriana Barney was edged by Bucknell's Tyne Miller, 6-1, 4-6, 0-1 (6-10).Â
In the White Group of singles,
Ryan McCarthy on a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Bucknell's Kate Novak while
Stephanie Huseby lost to Nigasa Miyake (SFU), 1-6, 1-6.
In the Grey Group singles, freshman
Emma Kaden fell to Samantha Quezada (SFU), 1-6, 0-6 with freshman
Polina Burkhard falling to Madi Sebulsky (Bucknell), 3-6, 4-6.
In the men's Blue Group,
Filippos Zachiotis was a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Alan Gonzalez (SFU). Freshman
Akarsh Gaonkar was downed by Tyler Nguyen (SFU) in the Orange group, 2-6, 5-7. In the White Group,
Aaron Thompson made his Mount debut a success with a come-from-behind 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Gregory Troyan (SFU).
Elliot Stevens recorded a 7-6, 6-2 win over Patrick Reese (SFU) in the Grey Group.
 In the Bison Group, freshman
Victor Mignot outlasted Kevin Kruzel (SFU), 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (15-13) while
Luke Papayoanou recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over Matt Kozar (SFU). In the Gold Group,
Jarrett Karnibad swept past Zach Palko (SFU), 6-0, 6-0.Â
Marcel Cronin fell to William Robinson (Bucknell), 1-6, 2-6 with
Andrew Allen falling to Darrin Lerner, 3-6, 1-6.
Play continues on Saturday starting at 9 a.m., with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
