May 6, 2023--Mount St. Mary's saw its 13-game win streak snapped by Canisius in the battle between the top two teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Saturday. The Golden Griffins won the opening game of the doubleheader, 8-0, in five innings before edging the Mount, 3-1, in game two. The two teams entered today tied for first place in the MAAC standings. The Mount closes out the regular season with a 32-17 record and a 15-5 mark in the MAAC. The Mount will be the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Championships which will be hosted by Canisius May 10-14.
The Mount entered today on a 13-game win streak, tied for the second-longest in program history. The Mount set the school record for wins in a season with their 32nd victory yesterday.
In the opening game, Canisius took control early with three runs in the bottom of ther first inning. That would be all Canisius starter Megan Giese would need as she held the Mount to one hit in the game. That hit was a single by
Abigayle Perry that led off the game.
Canisius (28-14-1, 17-3 MAAC) scored once in the third and four times in the fifth to seal the win. Mount starter
Avery Neuhart allowed four runs in three innings of work.
Canisius scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and held on for a 3-1 win in game two.
Tori Bowles led the Mount with a pair of hits in the game while
Maddie Coleman allowed three runs in a complete-game effort.
The Mount got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning.
Vanessa Martin double to lead off the inning and moved to third on a wild pitch. After
Erin Krizmanich drew a walk to put runners on first and third, Krizmanich stole second and Martin scored when the throw from the catcher went awry. Rosie Gomez added an insurance run for Canisius with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Giese was the starting pitcher again for the Golden Griffins, and she held the Mount to an unearned run and three hits while striking out 14 in the game. Coleman allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out three for the Mount.
The Mount heads to the MAAC Championships on May 10-14 which will be hosted by Canisius. The Mount is the No. 2 seed and will begin play Thursday, May 11, at 11:00 a.m. against the winner of the game between the No. 3 and No. 6 seeds.
