Season of Strides for Mount Baseball Concluded Saturday at Niagara

EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 20, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's baseball completed a season of positive progress Saturday in Lewistown, New York, even as Niagara put a dent into the script by defeating the Mountaineers in a 5-2 final.

Mount St. Mary's compiled a record of 25-27, going 10-14 for their first season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The overall win total is the second-most in program history and the highest since 2007, while the conference win mark is the most since 2018. Their final standing in the conference will be seventh, beating out Marist thanks to a series win earlier in the year in Poughkeepsie.

Statistics show a solid measurement of the achievements above. With 77 home runs, the squad shattered the program's Division I record of 51 set back in 2007, helping to eclipse the team record for slugging percentage at .487 in the process. Batting average (.301), on-base percentage (.393), base hits (534), runs (374), and RBIs (330) all rank top three since 1989, to name a few. The pitching staff fanned 381 batters for a new single season mark, led by Cooper Adams with 73.

More individual accolades include Shane Wockley finishing with 17 home runs, second most for a player in a single season in Division I. Scott Seeker ended with 70 base hits, also second most for a player in one year. On the mound, reliever Jett Slepak set a new high mark for opponents' batting average, limiting the competition to a .189 clip for the year.

Saturday's game saw Niagara jump out to a 3-0 lead in what amounted to a wire-to-wire finish. Aiden Tierney pulled the Mount within one by hitting a two-run shot, scoring Tyler Long. Niagara responded with solo shots in the fourth and eighth innings to build the 5-2 score.

Brendan Yagesh and JB Manarchuck appeared on the bump for the Mountaineers, combining for 12 strikeouts of Purple Eagles hitters. Manarchuck alone registered eight punchouts across five innings for a new career high.

Information on the 2024 campaign become available in the coming months.
