Mount St. Mary's Rallies for 3-2 Win over Siena in Completion of Halted Game

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 24, 2023)--Mount St. Mary's rallied for a 3-2 win over Siena in the completion of Saturday's game that was halted by rain.  The Mount trailed 2-0 with two outs in the top of the fourth inning when the game resume today before rallying for the victory.  The win stretched the Mount's win streak to nine games and improved the team's record to 28-15 overall and 11-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings.

Play picked up today with two outs in the top of the fourth inning with Siena's Jocelyn Ulrich at third base.  The Mount turned to freshman pitcher Maddie Coleman, who after a walk, got the final batter of the inning on a line out to left.

The Mount wasted no time getting back into the game when Maggie Kane drove an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to lead off the bottom of the fourth to slice the deficit to 2-1.  Tori Bowles and Hannah Gartrell strung together back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on first and second.  After a strikeout, Vanessa Martin grounded a ball to the hole at shortstop, and she beat the throw to first for an infield hit.  Pinch runner Gina Del Giorno never stopped running and score from second base on the play to tie the score at 2-2.

The Mount used a two-out rally to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Kane drew a two-out walk, and Mariah Godde followed by lacing a triple to the right-center field gap to plate Kane with the go-ahead run.  Mount St. Mary's loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Siena's Ava Fitzmaurice was able to escape the jam with a popout, a strikeout, and a groundout to keep it a one-run game.

Siena's Isabella Pardo had a one-out single in the top of the seventh.  Elizabeth King made a nice running catch in right field for the second out, but a wild pitch moved Pardo into scoring position.  Coleman, however, got Fitzmaurice to pop out to short to end the game.

Kane went 1-for-1 with a home run, two walks and two runs scored to lead the Mount offense.  Coleman pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory.  Olivia Murphy allowed two runs in 3.2 innings of work on Saturday.

The Mount moved past Siena into sole possession of second place in the MAAC standings with today's victory.  The Mount trails first place Canisius by one game with six remaining in the regular season.  The Mount improved to 21-3 at home this season while the team's 28 wins are the second most in a season in program history.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, April 29, with a home doubleheader against Rider at 12:00 p.m.  It is the final regular season home game for the Mountaineers and will be Senior Day.
