Emmitsburg, Md. (March 12, 2013)--Mount St. Mary's posted a pair of double digit wins to close out the Mount Softball Invitational on a cold day at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.
Maggie Kane hit a grand slam while
Amaya Bowman tossed a two-hit shutout in the Mount's 12-0 win over Central Connecticut in five innings in the opening game. In game two,
Olivia Murphy pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Mount past St. Bonaventure, 11-0, in five innings as well. The Mountaineers improve to 6-11 on the season with the pair of wins.
GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 12, Central Connecticut 0 (5 inn.)
The Mount scored in every inning in a 12-0 victory over Central Connecticut in the opening game on Sunday.
Maggie Kane went 2-for-2 with a grand slam while
Amaya Bowman tossed a two-hit shutout in the victory.
The Mount took control with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kane and
Hannah Gartrell posted back-to-back one out singles to put runners on the corners to start the inning.
Kaia Bonshock followed with an RBI single up the middle. An error led to the Mount's second run,
Tori Bowles lofted a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Three more runs in the bottom of the second pushed the Mount's advantage to 6-0.
Zoe Truxon walked and stole second base to start the inning.
Abigayle Perry and Kane were each hit by a pitch to load the bases for Gartrell, who came through with a two-run single to give the Mount a five-run lead.
Mariah Godde brought in the final run of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice.
Kane clubbed a grand slam homer in the bottom of the third to seal the win.
Laurenne Gallagher walked, Truxon singled up the middle and Perry walked to set the table for Kane who drilled a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for her second home run of the year. Bowles rounded out the scoring with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Bowman struck out four and walked one in her two-hit complete-game shutout to improve to 2-0 on the season. Kane went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a home run and four RBI while Gartrell was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win.
GAME 2: Mount St. Mary's 11, St. Bonaventure 0 (5 inn.)
Olivia Murphy tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Mount to an 11-0 win over St. Bonaventure in five innings in the final game of the day.
Mariah Godde went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI while
Zoe Truxon went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and a stolen base in the victory.
The Mount took control of the game with six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Godde started the frame with a single through the left side. She moved into scoring position with a steal, and advanced to third on a groundout.
Lia Festa walked to put runners on the corners, and Truxon laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Godde with the game's first run.
Vanessa Martin followed with a squeeze bunt of her own to make it 2-0. After Martin stole second base,
Abigayle Perry laced a two-run triple to left field to put the Mount ahead, 4-0.
Maggie Kane picked up an RBI when she reached on an error that allowed Perry to score, and another St. Bonaventure error led to the final run of the six-run outburst.
The Mount added to the lead in the third when Truxon singled, stole second, and came home on a Martin base hit. A four-run fourth sealed the victory for the Mountaineers. A
Kassidy Johnson base hit, a Bonnie error, and Bowles being hit by a pitch loaded the bases. Godde provided a two-run single to left center and Festa chipped in a two-run double to round out the four-run fourth.
Murphy struck out four while allowing one walk in her one-hit shutout to improve to 2-4 on the season.
The Mount is back in action on Wednesday, March 15, with a home doubleheader against North Dakota. The first game is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
