EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 18, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo was dealt another heartbreaking overtime result, falling to Johns Hopkins 14-13 in a grudge match at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Championships.
 
Nate Valentine factored into the offense, reaching a career high with four goals. Chrysostomos Valavanis and Alexandros Bellesis recorded hat tricks. Frederick Brown had the highest number of saves with seven, and every goalie played in the contest.
 
Both teams came out firing in the first frame. Valavanis scored two of the opening three goals as the Mountaineers opened a 5-3 lead. Hopkins tallied twice to level the score and edged the Mount 3-2 in the second quarter for a one-goal lead at halftime. Neither side could pull ahead more than two in the second half, and Valentine forced the extra sessions by firing home a 6-on-5 with two seconds remaining. However, a last second goal by Gavin Brooke in the first of the two overtime periods proved to be the difference.
 
The season wraps up tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 19) morning at 9 a.m. with a game against George Washington.
