Men’s Soccer Sees Season End on Second Half Goals

EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 1, 2023) – Three goals in the second half ended the playoff hopes of the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team, falling to the Niagara Purple Eagles 3-1 Wednesday in upstate New York.

Optimism was the early signal, as the Mount took the early advantage in the ninth minute. After Luc Holden made a long attempt that got caught in the wind, Mackie Sacarellos made a clean touch and found Markus Nilsen in front of a vacated net.

Nilsen became the third member of the team to register multiple goals on the year, finding the back of the net for the second time this season. Sacarellos finishes the campaign with the second most points on the squad, reaching six thanks to his assist.

Keeping the 1-0 lead into the second half, tides shifted in the 51st minute. On a midfield tackle, Dominik Topolsky was shown a red card, forcing the Mountaineers to play a man down. Niagara jumped on the opportunity, equalizing the match in the 65th minute. Even though a tie secured a spot for the Purple Eagles in the postseason, they ensured their place by posting goals in the 78th and 83rd minutes.

Mount St. Mary's completes their season with a record of 2-10-3.
