EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 28, 2022) – After battling to a scoreless first half in their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game, Mount St. Mary's men's soccer conceded an early second half goal. Fairfield kept the Mount off the scoreboard to preserve a 1-0 score in Connecticut Wednesday.
The Mountaineers held their own on shots 11-8, with the visitors holding the on-goal advantage 4-3. Fairfield took the lead on set pieces thanks to corner kicks, 12-2. Four different Mount players got the attempts at the net. Captain
Gavin Watt tallied one shot on goal as a defenseman, competing for the entire 90 minutes.
The first half passed quietly, with Fairfield's Stephen Perno providing the most strenuous moment with a shot off the woodwork. The Stags capitalized on the first opportunity in the second half with a goal in the 49
th minute by Raz Amir.
Mount St. Mary's worked to equalize.
Jesus Salazar got the first shot-on-goal, which was saved by James Anderson. Follow-ups from Watt and
Ruben Kiers were also denied by Anderson. One last attempt by
Ondrej Soukup in the 82
nd minute found Anderson in the center of the goal.
Charged with the defeat, the Mount's record fell to 4-4 (0-1 MAAC) on the year.
Game two of the road trip takes place Saturday (Oct. 1) at 1 p.m. with Canisius.
