Counters Costly for Mount Men’s Soccer in 2022 Opener

Box Score

NEWARK, Del. (August 25, 2022) – Chances in the first half of the 2022 season opener for Mount St. Mary's men's soccer were met with negative outcomes on counter attacks. The homestanding Delaware Blue Hens used those counters to build a 2-0 lead, then holding the advantage for the victory.

Delaware (1-0) put the Mount (0-1) on the defense at the start, registering three shots in the first 10 minutes. Gavin Watt got the first opportunity for the Mount off a corner in the 12th minute. Flirting with an early hole, the Mount averted it temporarily as the Blue Hens missed a wide-open net.

In the 32nd minute, Ammit Bhogal had a clear look but was ruled offsides a fraction ahead of the play. Given a counter, Delaware capitalized as Seidu Shamsudeen found a hole in the defense to open the scoring. Eight minutes later, Markus Nilsen came inches from drawing level with a shot off the crossbar. An unfortunate episode of déjà vu then hit the Mountaineers, as Sam Donellan converted the counter for a 2-0 lead at the break.

A shift in momentum came fast to start the second half. Mount St. Mary's received a foul call in the box, setting up a penalty. Preventing a 3-0 deficit, Ethan Russell stepped up and earned the save with a dive to his right. The Mount worked to put one on the scoreboard as Ondrej Soukup fired an on-target attempt that was turned aside by the Blue Hens' keeper.

More hope emerged in the 73rd minute, when at midfield, a Delaware freshman earned a red card for cutting down a breakaway attempt by Jesus Salazar. Facing 10 men, the Mount now looked to try and pull off a comeback as time dwindled down. Freshmen Bobby Marsteller and Ethan Glaser offered up attempts, but neither found the back of the net. Last ditch efforts from Kofi Amoah and Anthony Milazzo got blocked.

The 2022 home opener happens Tuesday (Aug. 30) when the Mount hosts Radford. Kickoff is 7 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
