EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 19, 2022) – Competing in their final series of the season, Mount St. Mary's made another comeback effort against the Northeast Conference leading LIU Sharks. Scoring five runs in the eighth, the Mount came up one run short in a 9-8 defeat.
Three players registered multiple RBIs –
Tyler Long,
Tristan McAlister, and
Shane Wockley.
Efrain Correa, Jr. reached base four times with three hits and reaching on an error. The team finished with 14 safeties, six walks and two batters getting hit by pitches.
Four pitchers took the mound for the Mountaineers.
Bryant Shives settled down the Sharks offense, limiting the visitors to two earned runs across five innings.
LIU took the lead with the first batter of the game, as Seth Surrett homered to right-center. The Sharks built a 5-0 lead up to the third inning, when
Tyler Grodell scored off a McAlister fielder's choice. One frame later, Long delivered his two RBIs with a single.
The Sharks responded immediately with three runs in the fifth, capped off with a Surrett double to stay up 8-3. In the sixth, EJ Exposito smacked his second solo shot to make to score 9-3.
That score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth. With one out,
Ryan Fisher started the rally with a single. Two batters later, McAlister singled home Fisher to kick off the scoring.
Aiden Tierney drove another run home to make the score 9-5. Correa took a ball to the chest for another run, and Wockley sent two more in on a single. The rally ended with the tying and go-ahead runs on base as LIU got the strikeout they needed.
A final rally attempt came through in the ninth. Two runners reached base, but Sharks closer Josh Gainer got the winning strikeout.
Game two of the series begins Friday (May 20) at 1 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies beginning at 12:30 p.m. at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
