Baltimore, Md. (April 6, 2022)--The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team traveled to Loyola on Wednesday and came away with a 5-2 victory over the Greyhounds. The women's team lost to Loyola, 5-2, in a close contest.
On the men's side, the Mount took two of three doubles matches to secure the point for the 1-0 advantage.
Giovanni Abriola and
Filippos Zachiotis teamed for a 7-5 win over Skyler Gates and George Cavo at the No. 1 position. Chrisos Dagklis and
Russell Armstrong sealed the doubles point with a 7-6 win over Edik Pribitkin and Matt Cardano at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Dagklis had a straight-set win over Gates, 6-3, 6-4, at the No.1 position with Zachiotis defeating Pribitkin, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2.
Jarrett Karnibad prevailed over Cavo, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles with
Nick Huynh providing the Mount's final point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ryan Boland at No. 6.
The Mount women's team fell to Loyola by the score of 5-2. The Greyhounds took two of three doubles matches to secure the 1-0 lead in the match.
Shirley Liang and
Riya Mathur combined for a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position over Lauren Manwiller and Jessica Bodewes. Loyola's Olivia Tracey and Anna Rico earned a 6-2 win over the Mount's
Amber Policare and
Adriana Barney at No. 1 doubles. Loyola's Abby Decker and Genevieve Wurtz edged the Mount's
Ana Alvarez-Storni and
Ryan McCarthy, 7-6, at the No. 3 spot to earn the doubles point.
In singles play, Policare rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Tracey while Liang outlasted Manwiller, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles for the Mount's points. Barney was edged by Rico, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles with Mathur falling in three sets to Bodewes, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4. Decker downed Alvarez-Storni in straight sets at No. 5 singles with Wurtz defeating McCarthy, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6.
The Mount men's team returns to action at home against Bucknell on Friday. Both teams conclude the regular season at Wagner on Monday, April 11.
