Mount Softball Sees Win Streak Snapped with 4-1 Loss to Fairleigh Dickinson

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 16, 2022)--Mount St. Mary's saw its 13-game win streak stopped by Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast Conference matchup at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.  Tori Bowles and Vanessa Martin each recorded a hit in the game for the Mount.

FDU (17-19, 9-6 NEC) used a strong pitching performance from Alayna Savaglio to secure the win.  Savaglio allowed just two hits while striking out eight in the complete-game victory.  Mount starter Amanda Berkley allowed three runs (two earned) in three innings of work while Avery Neuhart allowed one run in four innings of relief.

The Knights opened the scoring in the top of the first when Cassidy Triska doubled to lead off the game, moved to third on an error, and scored on a fielder's choice.  The Mount evened the score in the bottom of the inning behind the strong base-running skills of Bridgette Gilliano.  Gillano drew a one-out walk and stole second base.  Kaia Bonshock then drew a walk, and Gilliano moved to third on a delayed steal to put runners on the corners with no outs.  A wild pitch allowed Gilliano to scamper home with the game-tying run.  Gilliano's two steals in the game give her a team-high 33 on the season.

FDU answered with two runs in the top of the second to regain the lead.  Savannah Thornell was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, but Berkley rebounded with back-to-back strikeouts.  FDU, however, received a two-out walk by Isabella Herring and Triska was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Courtney Mahoney came through with a two-run single to right center field to make it 3-1.  That was all the offense the Knights would lead as Savaglio limited the Mount to a Martin infield single in the second and a Bowles base hit in the fourth the rest of the way.  Triska's solo home run in the seventh provided a final insurance run for FDU.

Mount St. Mary's is back in action with a three-game series at NEC leader Saint Francis U on April 19-20.  The Red Flash lead the NEC with an 11-1 lead mark with the Mount in second place with a 12-3 NEC record.  The teams will play a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 19, and a single game on Wednesday, April 20, at 12:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES:  Berkley's 17-inning scoreless streak was snapped with FDU's run in the top of the first inning...Abigayle Perry's walk in the fifth inning extended her streak of reaching base to 22 games...The Mount's 13-game win streak was the fifth-longest in the nation entering the contest.
