EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 4, 2022) - The Mountaineers were held scoreless for the last 25:53 as VMI ends the game on a 5-0 run to win 8-7.
Kadin Kightlinger had two assists and a goal to lead the Mount with three points, while
Jared McMahon tallied two assists to extend his point streak to 12 games, while
Connor McMahon and
Cormac Giblin scored two goals. The Mountaineers outshot the Keydets 42-29, including 16-5 in the second quarter.
Jordan Hartley led VMI with three goals and one assist, while four Keydets tallied two points.
Griffin McGinley made ten saves for the Mount, while VMI's Jack Liselli made 12 saves.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead after J. McMahon found Giblin, and he fired a shot past Liselli to make it 1-0. For the next ten minutes, VMI and Mount traded possessions until Scout Ripley found the back of the net with 3:28 left to tie the game at one.
C. McMahon got his fourth goal of the year after Kightlinger found McMahon up top, and he fired a low shot past the Listelli to retake the lead at 2-1. VMI equalized on their next possession on Jordan Hartley's seventh goal. Giblin scored his second of the game after Kightlinger ran past his defender and found Giblin wide open in front of the net and beat Listelli to make it 3-2. On the Mountaineers' next possession C. McMahon scored from near the top of the attack area for his second of the game to give the Mount a two-goal lead. Ripley cut the Mount's lead to one after scoring from a tight angle.
Brendan Lantieri scored just a minute over in the third quarter to increase the lead to 5-3.
Noah Daniels scored his second goal of the year 31 seconds later after he picked up a ground ball and ran down the middle, and fired a shot into the back of the net to increase the lead to three goals. Kightlinger scored on a man advantage after C. McMahon passed the ball to Kightlinger off the restart and blasted a shot far post to give the Mount their biggest lead f the game at 7-3. VMI cut the lead to three about four minutes later to get their first of the quarter. The Keydets scored with less than a second left to reduce the lead to 7-5.
VMI made it 7-6 with 9:15 left in the fourth quarter after both teams traded possessions for a couple of minutes. The Keydets tied the score at seven when Josh Bass blasted a shot from near the top of the attack area on a man advantage. VMI scored the game-winner with 2:57 left when Hartley picked up a ground ball and bounced a shot that went between McGinley's legs. The Mountaineers had four shots in the closing seconds that could not find the back of the net.
