Bramley Big in Opener, Mount Drops Two to Lehigh

EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 26, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's senior catcher Thomas Bramley went 3-for-6 during Opening Day, whacking two homers and driving in four. The team also saw a few fine pitching efforts and a game two rally but fell short in both contests to Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks took the first game 4-1 and the second 15-9.

First game starter Nick Breznak returned from an injury and delivered two solid innings of work. Aiden Tierney came in on a double steal attempt to give the Mount a 1-0 lead in the third, but Breznak struggled in the bottom half, allowing three Lehigh runs to cross the plate. Mountain Hawks pitching shut down the Mountaineers the rest of the way, allowing one hit for the contest – a double from Tyler Grodell. In relief, Cooper Adams allowed an unearned run and one hit across three innings of work.

There was much more offense to be had in the late afternoon contest. Once again it was the Mount who began ahead, scoring twice in the first inning. But Lehigh rallied to tie in the second and surged ahead in the third. In relentless fashion the Mountain Hawks posted runs in every inning until the eighth. The Mount added on single runs in the fourth, third and eighth. Making one final push against reliever Nick Pave, they rallied for four runs before the last out was recorded.

Bramley was the lone multi-hit performer in the finale, but the Mount received two runs scored from Tristan McAlister and a second consecutive game with a double from Grodell. Danny Salisbury pitched a scoreless eighth with a punchout – one of nine registered by Mount pitching in the finale.

The Mountaineers and Mountain Hawks meet again at Shepherd Stadium Sunday (Feb. 27) for another doubleheader. The seven/nine inning format will repeat along with a start time of noon.
