Russell Sets Save Record, Mount Falls to Marist to Seal Improved Season

EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 2, 2022) – In the 2022 season finale, Mount St. Mary's men's soccer junior goalkeeper Ethan Russell set the program's Division I single season record for saves with 88. Marist got the victory on their home turf with a 4-1 decision.

Russell registered five saves on the evening, surpassing Mark Murphy's 2003 mark of 86 with a rejection in the 65th minute. The Winchester, Virginia native recorded multiple saves in every match on the year, topping out at 11 in the team's 1-0 win over UMBC in December.

Program Captain Jesus Salazar got the lone goal off a free kick as time wound down Wednesday. The junior from San Diego secured the team lead in goals for the campaign with five, to go along with his eight assists and 18 points. The assist total ranks tied for sixth with Eric Detzel (2010) and Joe Young (1991) for the single season mark since joining Division I in 1988.

Capping off an improved season and inaugural campaign in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Mount St. Mary's finishes the year at 7-9-1 (3-6-1 MAAC). That bests a 3-15 mark from the previous season. Defying a last pace projection, the Mount ended its first year in the new league with a ninth place finish.

Marist took charge of the final match in the 11th minute with a goal from leading scorer Jared Juleau. Liam Salmon followed with a second goal 15 minutes later. A 2-0 halftime score doubled in a near instant with a pair of scores – one by Juleau and another from Matt Newfield. The Red Foxes ended their year with a record of 7-6-4 (3-4-3 MAAC).

After Salazar's leading total of five, 10 Mountaineers logged goals. Fellow multi-goal scorers included Ruben Kiers (4), Ethan Glaser (3), Kofi Amoah (2), Ondrej Soukup (2) and Marcus Lewis (2).
