BALTIMORE, Md. (January 29, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's swimming & diving faced several unorthodox events and gave opportunities for many athletes to run new races during Saturday's meet at Loyola. Both Mountaineer teams fell in the dual meets to the Greyhounds, with the men on the wrong side on a 196.5 to 56.5 score and the women a 204-55 score.
Wins began in the first event, with the Mount going 1-2 in the Mixed 200 Yard Medley Relay, a co-ed event.
Jonathan Mata,
Jake Wallace,
Valeria Villagran and
Maddy Samuels took the top spot with a time of 1:42.68. Many of the events totaled 50 yards in length, normally reserved for freestyle alone.
The Mount also saw individual victories by Villagran in the 50 free,
Meghan Speicher in the 100 free, and
Jason Fitch in the 100 backstroke.
Diving found many success stories Saturday with three new personal records.
Patrick Rankin set new standards for himself in both the 1 and 3 meter dives, with respective marks of 144.07 and 132.08.
Montana Griffith obtained a score of 193.72, good for both a PR and a team season high.
Catherine Davis added a season's best 163.65 for the 3 meter.
Top five finishes from Mata and
Kira Buchler (50 Backstroke),
Griffin Distler and
Peter Jones (50 Breaststroke),
Gregory Afolabi-Brown (100 Fly), Buchler (100 Back), Villagran (50 Fly) and a pair of Mixed 200 Yard Freestyle teams rounded out the day.
The men finish the regular season 3-2 with the women 1-5. Postseason play occurs February 22-25 with the Northeast Conference Championships in Ohio.
