Mount St. Mary’s Defeats Johns Hopkins with Lemishko as Emergency Goalie

| Box Score 2

EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 25, 2021) – A unique challenge faced the Mount St. Mary's men's water polo team found itself without its goalkeepers for their first conference games of the season. But thanks to the efforts of freshman Michael Lemishko, the Mount split the first day, including a 15-14 victory over Johns Hopkins.

Lemishko tallied 16 rejections when pressed into duty, including six in the win over the Blue Jays.

The triumph in the nightcap came in the form of a second half comeback after the Mountaineers were down 10-6 at the break. They pulled within 12-10 entering the fourth quarter, but that advantage held until the final four minutes. Zach Fischer delivered a goal with 3:15 left to cut it to one, and Eli Thalos tied the score one minute later.

With the game at 14-14 in the final seconds, it was freshman Jaden McNeal-Villafana who sent forth the winning shot with 15 seconds remaining. The defense that limited the Blue Jays to four second half goals kept the Baltimoreans at bay to preserve the win.

Jason O'Donnell scored six times, mostly in the first half, to set up the comeback later.

In the early matchup, the Mount built a 1-0 lead on George Washington with a goal from Thalos, but the Colonials rallied to surge ahead and the Mountaineers were forced to keep up. Falling behind 8-2, three straight goals – including two from Kiahi Horan – pulled the Mount within three.

But the third quarter was all George Washington, outscoring the visitors 6-1. The Mount tallied seven goals in the final eight minutes, including three from O'Donnell.

Mount St. Mary's (5-8, 1-1 MAWPC) returns to the pool in two weeks when to travel to Fordham and Wagner the second weekend in October.
