Emmitsburg, Md. (September 12, 2021)--The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis duo of
Elliot Stevens and
Giovanni Abriola lost in the consolation finals to cap the Mount's efforts in the Mountaineer Invitational held at the Mount St. Mary's Tennis Courts this weekend.
Stevens and Abriola advanced to the finals with a 3-0 victory over a duo from Saint Francis U. The pair won the doubles match by the score of 6-2. In singles, Abriola won by the score of 8-6 while Stevens won by default. In the finals, the Mount lost to a duo from Duquesne by a 2-1 margin. The Duquesne pair won doubles by the score of 7-6 (7-1). Stevens came away with a singles win, 8-6, for the Mount's point in the best of three. On the women's side,
Amber Policare and
Shirley Liang were defeated in the consolation quarterfinals today while the Mount duo of
Riya Mathur and
Adriana Barney lost in the semifinals.
The tournament format featured pairs from each team in the bracket. Those pairs played a doubles match, and the individuals will then face each other in best-of-three formats.Â
Up next, the men's team will head to the Loyola Invitational on September 17-19 while the women's next tournament is also the Loyola Invitational on September 24-26.
