Game Recap: Softball |

Big Day for Offense Forges Softball’s Split with LIU

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 3, 2021) – Multiple members of the Mount St. Mary's softball offense enjoyed big days at the plate as the team came within two outs of a doubleheader sweep. The Mount ultimately settled for a split after Long Island rallied to take the second game.

Freshmen were pivotal to the success, including Tori Bowles. The catcher 3-for-5 at the dish, driving in four runs and scoring twice. Abigayle Perry added four hits with three runs driven in.

The result moves the Mount's record to 11-7 (4-8 NEC) on the season.

Game 1 | Mount 9, LIU 1 (5 innings)

Mount's bats came alive by the third innings. Perry struck a double that tied the game, and Bowles brought in Perry with a sacrifice fly. Four more runs came in the following inning, with Bowles capping off the frame again with a two-run double.

A three-run fifth triggered the eight-run slaughter rule. Perry's second clutch hit – a triple – completed the contest with the score at 9-1.

Starter Amanda Berkley got the complete game victory, scattering four hits and an unearned run.

Game 2 | LIU 7, Mount 5

An exhilarating finish culminated in the nightcap. The Sharks developed a 2-0 lead without wasting time, as leadoff hitter Patricia Griffin hit the first pitch of the contest over the right field wall. A homer by Bowles halved the deficit, and Perry's double in the fifth knotted the score.

In the sixth, all prayers were answered after the Mount got two runners on base. Up to the plate stepped Elizabeth King, who smashed a three-run shot over the left field wall.

With a 5-2 advantage heading into the seventh, the Mount hoped for an easy inning. Instead, they found themselves in instant trouble with two singles. A fielder's choice brought them one step closer, but the Sharks scored off a wild pitch and quickly loaded the bases. After a free pass with the bags full, LIU's Rylee Bermea ripped a triple to send home all three runners.

A Mount rally did not come to fruition, and the split was settled.

The Sharks now behind them, Mount St. Mary's moves onto a four game series with Fairleigh Dickinson. Games take place April 10th and 11th in New Jersey.
