Emmitsburg, Md. (April 25, 2021)—Elizabeth King and
Tori Bowles provided the big hits as Mount St. Mary's swept Sacred Heart in a key Northeast Conference doubleheader at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Sunday afternoon. King hit a bases clearing double to give the Mount the lead for good in a 6-4 win in the opening game of the twinbill. Bowles belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to snap an 8-8 tie as the Mount outlasted the Pioneers 10-9, in game two. The Mount took three of four games in the weekend series.
The two wins move the Mount into fourth place in the league standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. The top four teams in the standings advance to the NEC Tournament.
Kaia Bonshock and
Maggie Kane each had five hits on the day while
Amanda Berkley picked up a win and a save.
Sacred Heart (10-20, 8-14 NEC) scored single runs in the first and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead in the opening game of the doubleheader. Amy Petrovich had an RBI double in the first while Maighread Scafariello added a sacrifice fly in the third. Berkley did a good job limiting the damage to two runs, stranding six Pioneer baserunners over the first three innings.
The Mountaineers (16-23, 9-12 NEC) scored four times in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. With two outs and no one on base,
Bridgette Gilliano drew a walk and Bonshock then singled off the pitcher to put runners on first and second. A Sacred heart error on a Bowles grounder to short loaded the bases.
Vanessa Martin was hit by a pitch to force home the first run of the game for the Mount. King followed by lacing a line drive to the left field fence to clear the bases to put the Mount on top, 4-2.
Mount St. Mary's added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Bowles walked, and a Sacred Heart error put runners on second and third with one out. King followed with a sacrifice fly to plate pinch-runner
Julia Vincent for a 5-2 advantage. Kane followed with a base hit to push the lead to 6-2.
Sacred Heart made things interesting when Alyssa Gonzalez and Emily Carroll connected for back-to-back solo home runs and Scafariello doubled to right center field to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Berkley responded with a strikeout and a fly out to center to end the game.
King drove in four runs for the Mount in the opening game while Martin scored a pair of runs and Kane had a two-hit effort. Berkley earned the complete-game victory, allowing four runs and eight hits while improving to 11-8 on the year.
In the second game, the Mount scored seven times in the bottom of the fourth to take what looked like a commanding 8-2 lead. Sacred Heart rallied to even the score with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth before Bowles connected on her tie-breaking homer. The Pioneers had the tying run at second in the seventh, but Berkley came on in relief to pick up the save to give the Mount the crucial sweep.
Sacred Heart jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two on a Caroline Kruger RBI single with the second run coming on a Mount error. The Mount cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning when
Abigayle Perry singled, stole second, and came home to score on a Bonshock base hit up the middle.
The Mount erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 8-2 lead.
Lexi Donovan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and
Maggie Kane singled up the middle, moving to second on the throw, to put two runners in scoring position. Perry was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Gilliano came through with a bloop single just inside the line in right field to even the score. Bonshock followed with a bloop single to left that scored Pery and Kane to put the Mount ahead, 4-2. Bowles added an RBI single to right field to make it a 5-2 lead, and
Kassidy Johnson's pinch hit RBI single make it 6-2. Donovan rounded out the scoring with a two-run double to center to give the Mount a six-run lead.
The Pioneers started their rally with four runs in the fifth, highlighted by a Gonzalez two-run homer. Myah Edlred's two-run single to right center field in the sixth evened the score at 8-8.
The Mount regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Bonshock singled to left center field to open the inning. Bowles followed and saw her drive to right center field clear the fence for a two-ruin homer. Bowles leads the Mount with five home runs and 29 RBI this year.
The Pioneers did not go quietly, rallying in the top of the seventh to make things interesting. Scafariello walked to open the inning, and after a pair of outs, Kylee Harvey singled through the right side of the infield to put runners on first and second. Berkley was called on in relief, and she was greeted by a Kruger RBI single up the middle that cut the Mount's lead to 10-9 and had the tying run on second base. Berkley was able to strike out Eldred looking to end the game.
Bonshock went 4-for-4 with three RBI while Kane added a 3-for-4 effort in game two. Bowles added two hits and three RBI while Perry scored twice in the win.
Avery Neuhart picked up the win, going 6.2 innings with Berkley getting the final out for her first save of the year.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action with another key NEC doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, April 27.
