Mount Softball Swept by George Washington in Home Opener

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 7, 2021)—The Mount St. Mary's softball team dropped both games of its home-opening doubleheader at George Washington on Sunday.  The Colonials took the first game, 10-2, in six innings before recording an 11-0 win in five innings in the second contest.

Game 1:  George Washington 10, Mount St. Mary's 2

In the opening game of the twinbill, George Washington scored in each inning in a 10-2 six-inning victory.  Bridgette Gilliano cracked her first career home run for the Mountaineers in the loss.

George Washington's Jenna Cone started the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first off Mount starter Amaya Bowman.  After adding a pair of runs in the second, Faith Weber hit a two-run homer in the third to push the Colonial advantage to 5-0.

The Mount (1-11) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Gilliano laced a solo home run over the left field fence to make it 5-1.  It was her first home run in a Mount uniform.  George Washington answered with a two-run Alessandra Ponce homer in the top of the fourth.

The Mount cut the deficit to 7-2 when Elizabeth King singled off the glove of George Washington third baseman Cone.  Kassidy Johnson followed with a double to right center field to plate King with the Mount's second run of the game.

George Washington sealed the win with two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Bowman allowed five runs (four earned) in three innings of work while King tossed the final three innings for the Mountaineers.

Game 2:  George Washington 11, Mount St. Mary's 0

George Washington scored seven runs in the third inning to break the game open en route to an 11-0 win in game two.  Gilliano and Johnson each had hits for the Mount in the game.

Weber started the scoring with a two-run home for the Colonials in the second, and then belted a grand slam in the third to put her team in control.
Gilliano doubled for the Mount to finish the day 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a home run in the twinbill.
