Kennedy, Key Bats Guide Mount Baseball to Victory

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 7, 2021) – Senior starting pitcher Brenden Kennedy was electric on the mound for Mount St. Mary's baseball, and timely hits forged a 7-3 win over Coppin State and a split in the four-game series.

Kennedy saw the minimum through five innings, allowing one single in the third before picking off the runner. He would finish with 5 2/3 frames, allowing three hits with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Ryan Fisher and Thomas Savastio recorded two hits each, and combined to drive in three of the seven runs. The Mount stole eight bases with having a single runner caught, led by Myles Nicholson. The school's all-time leader in stolen bases had three on the day, followed by Fisher with two.

After Kennedy exited in the sixth, Michael Yetter relieved him, got the Mount out of a jam, and delivered the game to closer Patrick Burke. The win was complete when Burke struck out the side.

Nicholson created the first run off a leadoff walk by stealing second and advancing home on productive outs. The Mount would put a crooked number up with three in the fourth, headlined by a Nicholson RBI single.

Coppin State got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. They drew two free passes on a hit by pitch and a walk. Yetter came to the mound and induced a fly out to end the threat.

The Eagles closed in once more with two runs in the eighth but Yetter neutralized the threat. Savastio supplied insurance in the bottom half of the inning with a two run single.

The next scheduled game for the Mount is Friday, March 12th with a 2 p.m. game with Delaware State.
