EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 6, 2021) – The Mount St. Mary's women's swimming & diving team won their first meet of the 2021 season, defeating the VMI Keydets 187-86 in Lexington, Virginia. On the men's side, the Keydets took the dual meet 201-97.
Kira Buchler was instrumental in the women's win, earning four victories between individuals and relays. She won the 100 yard backstroke in 59.65 seconds and the 200 yard backstroke in 2:08.33. For relay races, Buchler ran the first leg of the 400 medley in just over a minute flat, helping the team to a 4:12.03 time and the final leg of the 200 freestyle relay in 25.61 seconds for a victory there.
Additional top performances came from
Valeria Villagran, who also participated on Buchler's relay team, won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.10.
Emiley Lynch won the 200 yard freestyle and 200 breaststroke with respective times of 2:03.35 and 2:37.97.
In the 100 meter freestyle, the Mount finished 1-2-3 with
Jordan Friedman in first with a 56.37 second clip, followed by Villagran and
Juliet Whitman.
Freshman
Dahna Yoon won her first collegiate event with a 5:27.31 in the 500 yard freestyle, as did
Hannah Bonson with a 5:07.75 in the 400 yard medley.
The men's team received one individual win, thanks to
Jason Fitch. The freshman earned a 1:58.37 in the 200 yard backstroke.
The regular season now over, Mount St. Mary's turns to postseason play. The Northeast Conference Championships begin Monday, March 29
th, with details to come at a later date.
