Soccer Scores First Points of Season against CCSU

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 1, 2021) – On a raw Monday afternoon in New England, the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team played to a draw with the Central Connecticut Blue Devils, 2-2. The Mount (0-2-1) registered their first points of the season and their first tie since October 19, 2018 versus Bryant.

"Typical league match this afternoon. Back and forth for regulation and overtime." Head Coach Bryan Cunningham said. "Credit to our players for battling back after going down early. We are learning valuable lessons as we play more matches and we continue to grow as a group."

Central Connecticut (0-0-1) did strike the first blow on a penalty from Sean Gannon in the 11th minute. The Mount would counter with a strong finish to the first half, as shots from Gavin Watt (20') and Kyle Davis (30') found the back of the net.

But 10 minutes into the second half, the Blue Devils drew level when Johnny Morrell placed a shot past the Mountaineers' Adam Siviter. The goalkeeper locked in afterwards, saving three shots. For the rest of the way, the Mount got off four shots, including three in the overtime periods. The first shot was saved, while the others sailed off-target.

Watt's goal was his first as a Mountaineer, and Davis' was his first on the season.

Mount St. Mary's returns home next Monday (March 8) to face Merrimack. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium.
