Washington, D.C. (February 20, 2021) – For 101 minutes, the Mount St. Mary's defense held firm, fending off 14 shots from the George Washington Colonials. But in the opening minutes of the second overtime, the Colonials' 15
th attempt found the back of the net, handing the Mount a 1-0 defeat in the Spring 2021 season opener.
"Tough to lose in double overtime, but overall I'm pleased with our performance." Head Coach
Bryan Cunningham said. "Credit to GW, they played physical and disrupted our rhythm from the beginning. It will be a great learning experience for our players as we turn our attention to La Salle."
Contending with a busy day, the Mount defense dealt with numerous set pieces, including five corner kick attempts. Goalkeeper
Adam Sivitier tallied three saves, and the back line of
Ian Buckwalter, Justus Akinlosotu,
Gavin Watt, and
Adao Manuel denied several more on-goal opportunities.
Chances were few and far between for the offense, as the Mount registered three shots, all on goal.
Kyle Davis had two attempts, while
Fela Osifeso was responsible for the third. Colonial keeper Justin Grady deterred all three shots.
George Washington led in shots 12-2 by the end of regulation. Two more shots were turned aside by the Mount in the first overtime. The quiet offensive tide turned in the second overtime, with the Mountaineers getting the first opportunity. Davis' shot was saved by Grady, and seconds later on a counter attack, Oscar Haynes Brown secured the golden goal for the Colonials.
Mount St. Mary's opens their home schedule this Thursday against La Salle. Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium.
