EMMITSBURG, Md. (Feb. 22, 2020) - The Mount St. Mary's swimming & diving teams completed this weekend's conference championships Saturday. The men's team finished in seventh place with 150 points at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships in Knoxville, while the women's team took eighth at the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships on Long Island, tallying 127.5 points.
Kira Buchler was the leader of the women's team, scoring three times at NEC's. Individually, she placed 10th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.58 seconds. She was also a part of the 400 medley and 400 free relays - both of whom finished eighth. The 400 medley time of 4:02.47 was compiled by Buchler, Elizabeth Fahrney, Juliet Whitman, and Maggie deTar. In the 400 free, Buchler ran the third leg in a 3:36.18 time, accompanied by Jordan Friedman, Whitman and Valeria Villagran.
Several of the relay finishers also earned points as individuals as well. Whitman finished 14th in the 200 butterfly, and Villagran took 17th in the 100 butterfly. Eliza Felos took 18th in the 200 backstroke.
Three Mountaineers scored in the 3 meter diving finals, led by Montana Griffith with a score of 137. Laura Kingham and Catherine Davis added their names to the list as well.
On the men's side, Will Twizell and John Wilson led the way with performances in the breaststroke. Twizell finished fourth in the 100 meter with a time of 55.45 seconds, and eighth in the 200 meter in 2:04.09. Running in the B leg, Wilson actually beat Twizell's time with a 2:03.18 to take ninth. Wilson also took 10th in the 100 meter with a mark of 56.53 seconds.
Ryan Griffiths, Ethan Pham, Andrew Jones, Brock Cudahy and Jonathan Mata added points to the Mount's 150 point total.
For most, this weekend concludes the 2019-2020 season. Select student-athletes who qualified will compete at the National Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State next month.
