EMMITSBURG, Md. (Jan. 24, 2020) - Mount St. Mary's women's swimming & diving team defeated the VMI Keydets in the first of two duel meets. The women captured a 137-73 victory and the men fell just short, 122-102.
The Mountaineers won 14 of the 24 events in total, with the women taking 10 out of 12. Maggie deTar won a pair of individual events, taking the 200 individual medley in 2:38.09 and the 400 meter freestyle in 5:01.33. She also led the women's 200 free relay to a win, leading to a time of 29.06, resulting in a 1:55.51 clip. Eliza Felos was the fastest in the relay with a time of 28.86 seconds, and the junior also helped with the 200 medley victory. As an individual, Felos won with a time of 1:09.30.
Additional top performances for the women include Valeira Villagran and her time of 27.97 in the 50 freestyle, Kira Buchler with a :01.98 in the 100 free, Jordan Friedman and her time of 2:17.48 in the 200 free, and Juliet Whitman with a time of 1:09.18 for the 100 butterfly.
On the men's side, the team of Jonathan Mata, Will Twizell, Peter Jones and Ryan Griffiths won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.04. Griffiths' time of 23.83 at the end sealed the triumph. Jones and Griffiths contributed in the 200 freestyle relay win, along with Brock Cudahy and Andrew Jones. Peter Jones was the leader this time, pacing the squad in 23.89 seconds on the third leg.
Individual victories for the men came from Thomas de Xavier, who won the 100 meter butterfly in 59.47 seconds and John Wilson took the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.81.
Prior to the meet, the Mount honored its 2019-2020 seniors, including the final inaugural members of the men's swimming and diving team. The list of honorees include Victoria Aung, Cudahy, de Tar, Peyton Fuller, Matt Hart, A. Jones, Laura Kingham, Brianna Rizzo, Colette Robinson, Twizell and Matt Wehmeyer.
Day two of the meet begins at 11 a.m. at the Knott ARCC swimming pool.
ALTOONA, Pa. (January 24, 2020) – The No. 13 nationally ranked Mount St. Mary's bowling team is off to a perfect 4-0 start at the Red Flash Invitational at Holiday Bowl in Altoona, Pa. The Mountaineers picked up wins over #10 nationally ranked Youngstown State, Morgan State, Penn State-Altoona and Felician.
Sophomore Danielle Milo led the way for the Mountaineers with a 19.84 baker frame average. Sophomore Tamera Stanton also contributed nicely in the anchor position with an 18.59 baker frame average. Sophomore Kayla Durbala came in off the bench in the final two matches and posted a baker frame average of 18.20.
#13 Mount: 882 | #10 Youngstown State: 837
The Mountaineers grinded out a low-scoring win against Youngstown State for their first win against a top-10 nationally ranked team of the semester. With a narrow seven pin lead heading into game five, the Mount used a 170-135 advantage to seal the victory.
The Mountaineers used their highest scoring set of the day in the BYE round, posting a 962 set that was highlighted by a daily high game of 222.
#13 Mount: 894 | Morgan State: 805
The Mount came on top in a battle of the only two Maryland schools in attendance. An identical 200 score in games two and three gave the Mount the separation they needed over Morgan State.
#13 Mount: 802 | Penn State-Altoona: 652
The lowest scoring set of the day for the Mountaineers would come at a good time, as an 802 total pin-fall was able to outlast the 652 posted by the Nittany Lions of Penn State-Altoona.
#13 Mount: 908 | Felician: 777
After a rough 146 to open the match, the Mountaineers responded with games of 194, 187, 181, and 200 to defeat the Felician Golden Eagles by over 100-pins and cap off an undefeated day.
The Mountaineers currently sit on an island in tournament standings in second place, about 300-pins behind first place Youngstown and nearly 200-pins above Saint Francis-PA. Competition will resume at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow with five traditional matches. All competition can be streamed live off the team's Facebook page.
