Annopolis, Md. (October 27, 2017) -- Three Mountaineers advanced to the next round of singles competition during the first day of the Navy Gold Invitational on Friday afternoon.
BRACKETS/RESULTS
SINGLES
In flight A, Brandon Wortkotter topped Navy's Mathew Lee 6-4, 6-2 and Jackson Wood edged Princeton's Kabir Sarita 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-5. Freshman, Evan Hine defeated Loyola's Tyler Blessing 1-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 in flight C. Chris Lindsey picked up a default win in the flight D (yellow) flight.
Parth Sharma was topped 6-0, 6-3 by Noah Agarwal from Princeton and Zachary Burau was defeated 6-4, 7-5 by Longwood's Arthur Bardellotto in flight B of singles action. In flight C, Jean Armstrong fell 6-1, 3-3 to Igor Khvorostyan from Saint Peter's.
DOUBLES
The Mount duo of Wortkotter and Wood won the first match 6-4 against Saint Peter's Kvorostyan and Russotto but was topped 6-1 by Binghamton's duo of Pena and Quiros in the doubles flight. Burau and Sharma also won the first match but was defeated 6-2 by Longwood's duo of Blasco and Sakai.
Armstrong and Lindsey were blanked 6-4 in the first round and 6-3 in the first round of the consolation side.
The second day of the invitational will consist of two more rounds of doubles followed by two more rounds of singles competition.
