Washington, D.C. (October 30, 2015) – The Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team topped Howard and American in a double dual meet on Saturday night at Burr Gym Pool to improve to 4-0 for the first time in program history.
The Mountaineers defeated host-team Howard by a score of 122-80, and edged American, 105-100, to earn the program's first-ever win over the Eagles and first victory over a Patriot League school.
The Mount trailed American by six points with just three events remaining before clutch performances from Haley Fournier, Lauren Gullickson and the 200 free relay squads. Fournier earned a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:10.61) after pulling away from the pack at the midway point. Gullickson followed with the Mount's top finish in the 100 breast (1:09.90) to earn a second-place showing and propel the Mountaineers into the final event of the meet, which ultimately decided the outcome.
The Mount's 'A' relay squad consisting of JeMoon Won, Juliette Lacoste, Lenna Castro Marquez and Morgan Runk placed second in the final event of the night (200 free relay) in a time of 1:43.35. The team's 'B' relay squad of Bridget Vaughan, Alexandra Kelly, Angela Sampson and Katie Powell touched the wall in 1:48.81 to clinch the victory over American by edging out the Eagles' 'B' relay squad.
Fournier and Amanda Moore paced the Mount with a pair of individual victories each. In addition to claiming the top spot in the 500 free, Fournier also won the 1000 free in 10:38.55. Moore collected first-place finishes in the short-distance freestyle events, earning the top spot in both the 50 (24.82) and 100 (53.21).
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, November 6 to compete at the Mount Swimming Pool for the final time this season as they face Loyola (Md.) at 6 p.m. Fournier, Marquez and Powell will celebrate their final home meet with the program as part of Senior Day.
