WETHERSFIELD, Conn. – Andrew Lawton (Severna Park, Md./Mount St. Joseph) and Ryan Triller (Street, Md./North Harford) finished the first round tied for sixth to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a third-place standing at the season-opening Blue Devils Fall Invitational on Saturday.
Lawton posted a 39 on the first nine holes and a 36 on the back nine while Triller carded a 38 on the front nine and a 37 on the final nine holes to finish the day in sixth place with a score of 75, three strokes behind the current leader.
Kevin Ellison (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) ended the afternoon one stroke behind Lawton and Triller with a 76 to place 15th while Tonny Aizpun (Barcelona, Spain/Lycee Francais De Barcelone) is a stroke behind Ellison with a 77 to sit in 18th place. Eric Flockhart (Mississauga, Ontario / St. Francis Xavier), who is making his collegiate debut in the event, registered an 80 in his first collegiate round to place 36th after the first day.
Saint Peter's leads the two-day event with a score of 300, two strokes ahead of Sacred Heart (302) while the Mount (303), Central Connecticut State (308) and Iona (308) round out the Top-5 teams in the 10-team field.
The event marks the first event of the 2012-13 season and the first competition for the squad after its participated in the NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C. in May.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action in the final round of the Blue Devils Fall Invitational on Sunday.
