Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – UMBC scored in the eighth minute and held on to down Mount St. Mary's 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Friday.
Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) made five saves for the Mount (1-3-0) while Matthew Steele (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) recorded a team-high three shots in the loss.
Liam Paddock scored the decisive goal for the Retrievers (2-0-2) off an assist from Milo Kapor. Phil Saunders turned away six shots in the winning effort.
UMBC scored a goal in the first 10 minutes of the contest and held on to extend its unbeaten streak against Mount St. Mary's to 15 games.
Paddock found the twine on a header off an assist from Kapor on one of the Retrievers 12 corner kicks on the day at the 7:41 mark for a 1-0 lead.
The Mount had 10 shots in the game, but could not find the back of the net. Zoncher Dennis (Swarthmore, Pa./Swarthmore) gave the Mountaineers their first great scoring chance, but missed wide in the 12th minute.
In the second half, Steele had a nice left-footed shot only to see Saunders corral the ball for the save in the 81st minute before Mark Plaisance (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) gave the squad its final scoring chance, but Saunders turned that shot away in the 83rd minute.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday at Virginia. Game time is 7 p.m.
