BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Junior Courtney Griffith (Westminster, Md./Westminster) swam in four Mount St. Mary's relay victories at Bloomsburg Relays to lead the Mount women's swimming team in the season-opening event on Saturday. No team scores were recorded on the day, but the Mount's four wins ranked second to the host Huskies' five wins.
Griffith, who became the first player in program history to record All-Northeast Conference (NEC) honors last season at the NEC Swimming & Diving Championships, swam the second leg of the winning 300-fly relay (2:59.93), the final leg of the winning 200-free relay (1:41.65) and the final leg of the first place 400-free relay (3:44.72) and the final leg of the 500-free relay (4:58.54). The junior was also a member of the second-place 300-back relay (3:07.49).
Sophomores Cat Coppler (Enfield, Conn./Enrico Fermi) and Patricia Yam (Placenta, Calif./Rosary) and freshman Erin Regan (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) posted two-wins apiece on the afternoon.
Yam and Regan teamed up with Griffith to swim the first and third legs of winning 300-free relay while Yam, Regan and Coppler swam the first three legs of the 400-free relay before Griffith closed out the relay. Coppler, Mollie Walsh (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) and Anne Thelen (Winston Salem, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) opened the first three legs of the 200-free relay before Griffith brought home the victory.
Jessica Gardner (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill), Amanda Malmstrom (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Victoria Shaw (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Griffith won the 500-free.
Coppler and Yam joined Griffith in the second-place 300-back relay as part of six second-place standings on the afternoon. Walsh, Yam, Regan and Thelan placed second in the 800-free relay (8:20.87) while Yam, Thelan, Regan and Murphy Alafoginis (Lawrenceville, Pa./Wellsboro Area) teamed up to place second in the 400-medley relay (4:21.51). Coppler, Shaw and Regan swam the first three legs of the second place 400-medley relay before Griffith concluded the relay.
The foursome of Nicole Helmick (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll), Regan, Walsh and Coppler placed second in the 500-free relay (4:58.79).
Coppler, Walsh and Malmstrom placed third in the 300-fly (3:11.93) while Gardner, Malmstrom, Shaw and Griffith placed third In the 500-free relay. Malmstrom, Shaw and Regan teamed up for a third-place standing in the 1200-free relay (13:34.17).
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Oct. 17 at home against Saint Francis (Pa.). Meet starts at 5 p.m.
